A pair of victories for Liqui Moly Team Engstler in TCR Asia Series season opener
04. April 2018 -With victories for Luca Engstler and Mitchell Cheah as well as two further podium results at Sepang International Circuit, Liqui Moly Team Engstler had a particularly successful start of its campaign in the 2018 TCR Asia Series. The team that had claimed last year’s teams’ and drivers’ titles lived up to its role as favourites and seamlessly built on the achievements from the previous year.
Luca Engstler started the first race of the weekend from pole position. With a strong performance, the young German managed to win the opening race with his #8 Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR SEQ with PAGID Racing Brake Performance. Local hero Mitchell Cheah (#29 Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR SEQ) completed the 1-2 for Liqui Moly Team Engstler by finishing second.
Grid positions were reversed for the second race of the weekend. Mitchell Cheah started the race from ninth place and was already able to make up valuable positions in the opening stages. With a consistent performance, he worked his way up into first place and scored a much-celebrated victory in his home race. His team-mate Luca Engstler finished in third place.
Kurt Treml, Sport Director Liqui Moly Team Engstler: “It was a great weekend and we are very happy, proud and satisfied with the results of the weekend. We are looking forward to the next event in Buri Ram. We have been there many times before so we know the circuit and the setup that we need to do.”
Mitchell Cheah is leading the TCR Asia Series drivers’ standings with 47 points from Luca Engstler (45 points). In the teams’ standings, Liqui Moly Team Engstler is clearly in the lead with the considerable margin of 50 points.
The next round of the TCR Asia Series will be taking place at Chang International Circuit in Buri Ram (Thailand), 1-3 June, 2018.
